De Belgische overheid berekent het marktaandeel van ziekenhuisnetwerken door het totale aantal ziekenhuisverblijven te beschouwen als een "markt" die verdeeld is over de verschillende ziekenhuizen en ziekenhuisnetwerken. Dit marktaandeel wordt weergegeven per gemeente van woonplaats van de patiënt, zowel per leeftijdsgroep als voor alle leeftijdsgroepen samen. Het staat uiteraard iedereen vrij om een meer verfijnde analyse te maken op basis van de beschikbare gegevens.
De ondergrens van 5 (absolute waarde) per gemeente geeft een vertekend beeld voor ziekenhuizen met een dun maar wijdverspreid marktaandeel.
